Ethos Energy Telfer TX801 change out
Commencement: July 2018
Completion: August 2018
Type of Contract: Lump Sum
Contract Value: $185,000
Scope of Work
Changing out of the faulty generator step up transformer with the spare transformer. A full scope of testing was conducted on the spare transformer and compared with the factory acceptance testing; all tests were acceptable so change out could commence.
All HV connections and LV bus works from the generator circuit breaker were disconnected. All auxiliary wiring was isolated and disconnected from the transformer. The old transformer TX801 was removed from its position and place in an area that would not interfere with the spare transformer’s installation. The spare transformer was brought to the site on a low loader and placed into position.
The shock recorder was downloaded and assessed and no great G forces were recorded. A full scope of electrical testing was done to the transformer to ensure that there was no damage done during the move. All auxiliary equipment was reinstalled and wired up. A full scope of protection testing was conducted to prove all protection devices are fully operational and working correctly. Through injection to prove the restricted earth fault was completed and tested successfully.
Project Challenges
The biggest was the remoteness of the site as nothing was available on site. Cranes came in and had to be located in such a way that the overhead buss works were not interfered with or damaged. This limited the reach of the cranes and the manoeuvrability of the lifts making it slow progress.
Safety always comes first but pressure to ensure the transformer is ready for service as soon as possible is always present.
Dingo’s stealing our laptop bags off the utes was another point that highlighted the risks that we don’t usually get on site.
Zero Harm
All works were conducted without safety or environmental incident. The site contact commended the workers on their professional conduct, communication and high standard of work.
